East London: Defeated Eastern Cape Public Works MEC Babalo Madikizela is expected to resign as the MEC of the province.

Speaking to reporters after announcement of the new ANC provincial leadership, Madikizela confirmed that he will be leaving government as the responsible MEC for department of public works.

Madikizela said he will be engaging the re-elected provincial chairperson and current premier of the province Oscar Mabuyane about his resignation.

“I am definitely leaving, it’s just a matter of time and engaging the leadership but they know I’ve been wanting to leave for the past two years. I am leaving government”

It is not clear where he is going, however sources close to him, indicated that he will pursue business in mining, which is a sector led by Minister Gwede Mantashe who is Madikizela’s close ally.

Meanwhile Both Mabuyane and Madikizela were contesting for same position of the ANC provincial chairperson.

Mabuyane received 812 votes, while his contender Madikizela received 662 votes.
