Malamulele: The Former Chief Financial Officer at Collins Chabane Municipality, in Limpopo, was arrested on Thursday for his alleged involvement in unlawfully and irregularly investing municipal money with VBS mutual Bank.
According to Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Thandi Mbambo, “it is alleged that on the 23rd of October 2017, Collins Chabane Municipality invested R120 million with VBS in contrary with the Municipal Finance Management Act.”
He is expected to make his first appearance in the Palm Ridge Specialized Commercial Crimes Court on Friday, 06 May 2022 for contravening the Municipal Finance Management Act.
This is the second arrest of a municipal employee from Collins Chabane, following the arrest of the erstwhile Municipal Manager, Charlotte Ngobeni, last year in March.
Ngobeni was arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Task Team and later released on R50 000 bail. She is expected to appear before the court again on Monday, 09 May 2022.
Mbambo also said the investigations regarding the VBS cases are at an advanced and more arrests are imminent.
A total of 27 suspects have been arrested in connection with the VBS scandal.
