Bloemfontein: The Magnificent Wednesday School Sports (MWSS) will be expected to continue after the Lockdown period when the schools resume.
The MWSS which kick-started in Botshabelo where it was launched by Education Department MEC Tate Makgoe, will perceive all schools from across the province taking place.
Makgoe said the league will be played in all 5 districts of the province, starting from circuit level to regions where winners will advance to district level and later progress to compete in the provincial finals that will be played late this year.
“There are 3 different sporting codes, which are Football, Netball and Softball consisting of a total of 5 533 pupils coming from 1 165 schools in the province.
This initiative seeks to eliminate social ills that hinder teaching and learning in schools and communities, tackling issues such as school violence and substance abuse,” Makgoe said.
He added, “Pupils who participate in sports are fitter, healthier and more confident, which will result in better life choices.
Through the leagues, pupils’ talent will be identified to further expose them to possible sporting career paths,” said Makgoe.
Sports also encourage learners to practice mutual respect, discipline and teamwork.
